According to our log files, we lost the most important customer of bookalizer: http://www.weiterbildung.in.nrw.de/. They used to integrate our services what led to > 100.000 generated ads per month. In April, they switched to an amazon feature that looks quite nice … but it’s really bad! Our ads were based on the context and keywords of the page and they matched the courses presented on the page. Now, amazon seems to display random books – you get book advertising about Dalai Lama and books for children when you are on a page about a HTML course. Very strange. Please, you guys, switch back to bookalizer!
Nevertheless, we had > 16.000 generated book ads in April which is not that bad.

After the great news below (> 300.000 book ads delivered by bookalizer since 2007), I started the adaption of the bookalizer to the new amazon web services (AWS) version 4. Now, the beta is online – reachable for testing by a link behind the „test“ button in the config window. I will switch the complete service during the next 4 weeks. 2006 hat der Verein die Webseite bookalizer.com live geschaltet. Seitdem hat den Dienst niemand mehr beachtet. Nun hat amazon angekündigt die vom Dienst verwendete Version der amazon Web Services (AWS) abzuschalten und nur noch Version 4 zu betreiben. Ich war kurz davor, den Dienst abzuschalten, habe dann aber noch einen Blick in die Statistiken geworfen. Warum? Deshalb:

Größte Nachfrager ist die Seite http://www.weiterbildung.in.nrw.de/ des Ministeriums für Schule und Weiterbildung des Landes Nordrhein-Westfalen. Man man dort nach einer Schulung sucht und sich dann die Details anzeigen lässt, wird unter der Detailseite eine Werbung zum entsprechenden Thema eingeblendet: eine Werbung von bookalizer.com! I’m very busy at the moment, that’s why we hadn’t an update for a long time. I added the vertical layout type for one of our users.

By the way: amazon is promoting a new kind of ads: build-in shops. Nice thing for people not knowing how to use web services. I hope, you use bookalizer instead to supporte the good cause.

There is a new layout type available for the bookalizer: „Details“. With that type, you can display a book ad including the average customer rating and the product description. In addition, there is an auto-scrolling configured for the surrounding DIV because you have problems with the different ad sizes otherwise and a larger image of the book cover is displayed. Please find the example below. Feedback is always appreciated! Try it

History: the charitable organisation Clever Spenden e.V. who is running bookalizer.com was planning a German site to offer sports bets. The site was already developed under tippspende.de, but the German laws were against us! We would have violated the law by launching the site and offering bets. So we skipped the whole idea. There is an interesting book that helped me a lot with the concerning legal questions. Please find the book below as an example for the new layout type of bookalizer (unfortunatly, there is no amazon description available for that book).

I added some references of sites using bookalizer. A large Austrian bank was using the service for a few days as far as I can see out of the log files. But suddenly the log entries disappeared. What a pitty … that would have been a nice reference …

I saw in the web that some people isn’t using the scripts in a correct way. They pass „undefined“ as amazon tag to the service. This makes no sense although the link is working. I fixed this by replacing „undefined“ by the amazon tag that is bound to the good cause. I think that’s fair.

I made some changes to bookadmin: now, it is possible to save books without author (yes they exist!) to the database. Besides, you can move books to your library from the shopping card and your notes.
In addition, there were some minor bugfixes.

A lot of request are coming from Englisch speaking people, so I switch the blog language.

The new version of bookalizer is now prepared to word for amazon.de, amazon.fr, amazon.co.uk and amazon.com. Further localization (Englisch interface) is prepared. There were also minor bugfixes.

A few day ago, bookalizer was listet on http://www.programmableweb.com as Mashup of the day. Not so bad.

Heute geht der Bookalizer als Ergänzung des BookAdmin online. Inspiriert durch die Self Optimizing Links von amazon habe ich einen ähnlichen Dienst geschrieben. Aber es gibt diverse Vorteile, u.a. dass man eine Keyword Liste hinterlegen kann, zu denen passende Bücher gesucht werden. Die Seite ist also nicht unbedingt an den Referer gebunden wie bei amazon. Der Referer kann auch verwendet werden. Dann nutze ich den Topicalizer als Webservice um die Keywords aus der Seite zu extrahieren.
